Glorious 26 the age-old history of the city is felt in its unique atmosphere. Sozopol was founded by Greeks from Miletus and his original name was Apollonia after the Greek God of arts and crafts. Ancient Apollonia quickly gained an important place in ancient trade and became the staging point for trade between the Greeks and Thracians. Other names of the city is Apollonia Pontica Apollonia on the Black sea and Apollonia Magna – the Great Apollonius. Somewhere in the 4th century the population of Apollonia, adopted Christianity, and, like many other cities, is named after the pagan God Apollo, the village was renamed and received the name Sozopol – "the Town of salvation". In the middle ages the town became the biggest fishing city on the black sea coast of Bulgaria, and in recent times has started to realize its tourism potential.
